RALEIGH - The North Carolina Department of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation will hold the inaugural meeting of the Virginia-North Carolina High Speed Rail Compact on Monday, July 12th, from noon to 2pm.

The meeting will be held in room 150 of the NCDOT headquarters at 1 S. Wilmington Street in downtown Raleigh.

According to the NC DOT, this initial public meeting the members of the compact will be sworn in, officers will be elected and procedures to conduct business will be adopted.

“The meeting also will provide an opportunity for the compact to discuss strategies to advance multi-state high speed rail initiatives,” said the NC DOT in a released statement.

The Virginia-North Carolina High Speed Rail Compact was authorized by the U.S. Congress and established through legislation enacted by the Virginia and North Carolina general assemblies.

The primary multi-state high speed rail initiative underway currently between North Carolina and Virginia is development of the Southeast High Speed Rail Project.

The project examines the feasibility of a high speed rail system that would run from Washington DC to Charlotte and would pass through Raleigh.

Later stages of the rail system could include Atlanta, Savannah, and Jacksonville, Florida.

Public comments are currently being accepted on the Tier II Environmental Impact Statement for this initiative at www.sehsr.org.
